how do they work?
Did you know that it feels like the Earth is still but it is slowly moving. The Earths crust is likea cracked shell of a boiled egg. Tectonic Plates started 25 million years ago. There are 7 main Tectonic Plates. Tectonic plates are made from several slabs of rocks and they fit together like jigsaw pieces. Tectonic plates are a mix of Continental and Oceanic Crust. Tectonic plates move in different ways. One goes one way and the other one goes another way. There are lots of other ways that tectonic plates move. When 2 plates collide,the crust is pushed up to form a mountain range.
When tectonic plates collide together it can make volcanoes erupt. New Zealand is on the active boundary of the Australia and Pacific Plates. There are about 14,000 earthquakes in and around New Zealand each year. Tectonic plates push magma up which causes volcanoes to erupt. Under the sea most plates go apart. Tectonic plates can help us when they collide together and make volcanoes to erupt because they can make islands bigger.
